The Legend of Love (Suite)
Short summary
Sadness reigns in the chambers of Queen Mehmene Banu. In order to distract the queen from her sorrowful thoughts, the Vizier orders the jesters and dancers to entertain her. However, nothing can distract her from thinking about the beautiful young man, Farhad. In despair, she realizes that, having lost her beauty and sacrificed herself to save her sister, Shirin, the love of the young artist Farhad is now out of reach. Yet, her passion for him torments the queen. In her dreams, Mehmene Banu imagines herself beautiful again, and Farhad loves her.
Queen Mehmene Banu and Princess Shirin, surrounded by courtiers and guards, are walking toward their new palace. In the palace square, the sisters suddenly meet Farhad's gaze. The love for the young man still burns in their hearts. The procession moves away. Farhad is captivated by the beauty of young Shirin.
Shirin secretly returns to the square, hoping to see Farhad again. The young girl and the young man are irresistibly drawn to each other.
Young Shirin dreams of happiness with her beloved. She is filled with both anxious and joyful premonitions.
Farhad sneaks into Shirin's chambers, and they run away from the palace together. Consumed by jealousy, Mehmene Banu orders the lovers to be captured. The chase catches up with the runaways.
The pleas of the lovers for happiness are in vain. Mehmene Banu imposes an impossible condition on Farhad: he will get Shirin if he can break through the iron mountain that blocks the water supply to the people.
Farhad is ready to undertake this heroic act for the sake of love. He bids farewell to Shirin.
